The Sicilian Farmer is an innovative farm business established in 2020. Specializing in cold-hardy allium production using sustainable growing practices, we follow organic standards (recently enrolled in TOPP -Transition to Organic Partnership Program). Our farm is the key to our larger food business model, which consists of retail and culinary components. We opened our retail farm store in 2023 and will be launching our farm-to-table wood fired mobile pizza trailer the summer of 2025.
General Description
The Farmhand team is made up of people who find reward in physically exertive outdoor labor. Farmhands must be team oriented with the ability to complete work assignments in a fast-paced, high-quality manner. The duties vary on the farm throughout the growing season, however, when practical, farmhands will have the opportunity to specialize in specific job duties.
Basic Job Duties
- Operate the rotary plow with the two-wheel tractor to form raised beds
- Haul and spread manure, fertilizer, mulch and other materials to condition and protect soil, using the bucket loader, wheelbarrows, hand tools and tractor drawn equipment
- Form and sow seeds into seedling blocks, transplant nursery stock or direct seed into fields
- Set up and operate irrigation equipment, using sprinklers and watering cans
- Inspect, cultivate, mow and weed garden areas, reporting indication of pests activity to farm supervision
- Chip/shred plant debris including tree branches, straw and hay to use for mulch or compost
- Move, place and secure silage tarps over garden bed areas to mitigate weed growth and control pests
- Harvest fruits, vegetables and hay by hand, or using specialized equipment
- Participate in the cleaning, inspecting, grading and sorting of crops
- Load agricultural products into boxes, storage racks, coolers and trucks for delivery or storage
- Repair, install or assemble hand tools, fences and other equipment or structures as necessary
- Organize, clean and sanitize all work production areas and equipment as required
Please note this is not an exhaustive list of all job duties. For workers with sufficient experience and interest level, the work may also include construction and fabrication activities, the maintenance of buildings and equipment, the operation of heavy machinery and/or supervisory duties for additional pay
