Heritage Farming

Old Roots.
New Shoots.

We specialize in growing heirloom garlic and heritage wheat varieties that are well adapted for the harsh realities of Maine’s cold winters. Bred generations ago for their cold hardiness, our crops are planted each fall and emerge the first of spring after ice out.

Sicilian Hands.
New England Lands.

Our tradition began in Sicily in the year 1859 when Great Grandpapa Paolo Freddura was born, the original Sicilian Farmer. Farming is our way of connecting to the traditional foodways of our peasant ancestors in a way compatible with the harsh realities of New England’s winter climate.

We Prefer Things The Old Way

Most of our equipment is restored old machinery recovered from past generations. Our wheel-powered sickle mower, hay loader and manure spreader get all of our field done without the need for a tractor. Some of our antiques have been modernize for efficiency gains such as our Gandy seeder upgraded with a linear actuator for remote control of the spread lever.

Natural Farming Is The Future

No need for synthetic fertilizer, we produce our own compost on site using locally available waste ingredients including fish scraps, farmyard manure, wood shavings, fresh hay clippings, garden and lawn waste, just like it was done back in the day.

Heritage Wheat Seed Restoration

In 2024 we began trialing heritage wheat landraces in collaboration with the Maine Grain Alliance. After a successfully first season we replanted collectively an acre consisting of two very rare European landraces: Banatka (of Hungarian origin) and Poltavka (of Ukrainian Origin). Both are performing well despite the very windy, frequently wet, and occasional droughty conditions at our Farm each summer.
